WILL THE VEGAN DIET MAKE MY POOP SMELL LIKE ROSES?
Hi there!
My name is Laura Young. So who the feck am I, I can hear you ask? I’m probably better known as “Laura’s Views”, I use my social media outlets (YouTube, Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram) to talk about all things lifestyle, health, beauty, and most controversially... ALL THINGS VEGAN! Yes I am a vegan. Don’t leg it just yet though, I’m not your stereotypical vegan! For more information about me you can read my interview with IrishFitFam here.
Many thanks to David for inviting me to do a guest post for IrishFitFam and for today’s post I want to talk about three good and three bad things I’ve noticed since going vegan a year and a half ago!
Let’s start off with the GOOD, shall we? Brace yourselves, I have a tendency to overshare!
1) Easy weight maintenance – NO CALORIE COUNTING NECESSARY!
Between April and September 2015 I had lost a significant amount of weight, three and a half stone to be precise and I had done that by counting my calories, eating a high protein diet, and exercising in the gym. I worked hard. Since going vegan, I can eat more or less what I like and not even entertain the thought of logging into a calorie counting app. (This is only the case when I eat whole unprocessed plant foods! If I stuff myself with Oreos and frozen veggie burgers for a week or two I can definitely feel my jeans getting a little tighter). It’s a great feeling being able to eat to absolute satiation without stressing over calories or macros, and as a result of all the whole food carbohydrates, the abundance of energy is incredible.
2) Smooth pooping – Yes I’m going there!
Something nobody wants to discuss but honestly it’s been such a game changer for me. Want more detail? SURE THING! I never really “suffered” when it comes to digestion, or so I thought, but ever since switching to a whole foods, plant-based diet, everything moves like clockwork. I “go” once or twice a day, and it’s a very smooth process! The flipside to this is, when I do indulge in some processed or fatty food, my body (digestive system) FREAKS out, and things can get a little explosive. I’ll leave it at that.
3) Thrush be gone!
Something I suffered with on a fairly regular basis was thrush. I’ll never forget the itch and burn, oh for feck sake it was agony. Maybe 3-4 times a year this would happen, requiring attendance with my GP, medication, creams, suppositories, the glamour of it all! Ever since switching to a plant based diet, I have had thrush a grand total of ONCE, and this was an aftermath to a week of heavy antibiotics. I’m not sure what the science behind this is, but it’s one of the major things I’ve noticed since going vegan, as, if you’ve had thrush before you’ll know, it’s no laughing matter.
And now for the BAD:
1) My farts STINK
My other half is literally baffled by how much my cute little toots can wipe out a room. And I’m not in denial either, sometimes I have to leave the room myself! I’m not sure why this is, maybe it’s the high levels of fibre I’m taking in, or maybe my arse is squealing for joy, but I’ve heard farts are a sign of good health and if that’s accurate, sure look I’m delighted!
2) I’m so bloody awkward
I’ve been really lucky so far in that I’ve been able to get a decent meal anywhere I’ve gone but I’m still a little bit conscious of being “that awkward vegan” when eating out with friends and family. I definitely see more options popping onto mainstream menus which is deadly, and hopefully one day I won’t have to ask for a meal to be adapted to cater for me, and there will be loads of options on the actual menu!
3) Aggression from non-vegans
I know vegans have the stereotype of being aggressive, throwing red paint on politicians and protesting outside abattoirs, but honestly I’ve experienced some of the worst verbal aggression since going vegan. The one incident that sticks out the most in my head was at a wedding last year; I quietly told the waiter that I would have the vegan option, and the man sitting directly across from me started a full-on fight with me over my diet choices. The groomsman ended up having to come over and tell him to calm down. To this day I have no idea why he got so worked up! But yeah, people automatically assume that I am judging their diet choices, when that is not the case. I am only responsible for what I do!
So there you have it!
Have you ever considered veering more towards the vegan side? Is it something you’re curious about or are you totally against it? Would love to hear your thoughts!
Thanks again to David for having me here!
